Our Classes
Want to gain confidence? Want to learn how to be more efficient with your strokes? Want to learn how to successfully perform assisted and self rescues? Maybe you’ve heard kayaks are tippy or just want to try something new. Rhett is an ACA (American Canoe Association) licensed, insured, and certified Coastal kayak instructor. We can professionally teach anything from the very beginner up to Level 2 Coastal kayak instruction in a safe, fun, and relaxing way. Safety is our number one priority, and we enjoy nothing more than introducing folks into the fastest growing sport in America. Classes are purposefully designed to be small in size to provide better one-on-one instruction but can accommodate small groups such as church and Boy/Girl Scout Troops. Ask about special group pricing!
Our kayaks fit all shapes and sizes. If you have a child or teen that might just like to get on one, we can do that too. My 14-year-old daughter loves to tag along at times and help show others her age that they can do it too on our most basic outings. Let us know what you are looking for, we’re excited to help!
We offer 3 levels of courses:
-
This course is designed for the person who has never really been on a kayak and wants to just get a feel for it, get a small bit of instruction, and see if this is for them. You can try out a couple of different types of kayaks, learn some of the differences in types of kayaks, paddles, vests, etc. This class runs around 3 hours long; about half on land and half on the water. It is $150 per person.
-
So you like kayaking and think this may be the next sport for you and want to up your game! This course teaches you the strokes and techniques you need to safely and efficiently propel your kayak. We get in depth on properly outfitting life jackets, discuss safety gear and laws. We discuss paddle type and length. We discuss safety topics such as weather, wind, and waves. We get a little more in depth on how hull design affects the kayak's performance and what is best for your type of kayaking. This class runs 4-5 hours and is $250 per person.

This course builds upon the Rookie course. You do not necessarily have to have previously completed the Rookie course but is highly recommended. If not, you must verify you know your way around the kayak and know basic strokes. In this course we will build upon the basic strokes you learned and add a few others that come in handy. You will also learn how to self rescue as well as do assisted rescues. We will also get into towing a “tired” paddler vs an “incapacitated” paddler. We will build on our land safety prep, the do’s and don'ts, when to not go out, etc. This course is split into two days and typically runs a total of 7-8 hours. The cost is $350 per person.
After the completion of each class, we will provide you with a card showing the class and dates of the completion of your courses.
*Note: These do not make or qualify you to be an ACA instructor. These classes are intended to make you safer on the water and gain confidence as your experience grows. If you want skills assessments per ACA guidelines, please let us know.
**Note: You do not have to be a member of the ACA to take any of our courses but again we highly recommend it!
